Summary:The Academy of Natural Sciences is Philadelphia's Natural History Museum and the oldest continuously operating natural science research institution in the Americas.The Academys Women In Natural Sciences (WINS) program is an extra-curricular science enrichment program for female high school students, focusing on ecology and the natural sciences.
The Academy is seeking a full-time WINS II. Coordinator to develop and implement activities that support WINS II students academic and personal development.With regards to those WINS II girls who are also employed in the Museum as Exhibit Explainers, the WINS II Coordinator will work with the Education and Visitors Services staff to actively manage students on the museum floor, ensuring that Explainers are providing extraordinary customer service.The WINS II Coordinator will also help support the WINS I program as directed by the program Manager.The WINS II Coordinator reports to the WINS program Manager. RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop, implement, and evaluate all components of the WINS II program including but not limited to:
1.Science-based educational lessons with experiential components- especially community service-oriented environmental stewardship projects;2.Academic advising and support;3.College preparatory activities including weeklong college tour, application/financial aid support and tutoring;4.Work with Visitor Service Department and Education Department to ensure high quality visitor experiences with regards to the WINS Explainers;
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with participants, parents, school district personnel, and community members
Maintain alumni database and develop plans for alumni involvement in the program.
Help with recruitment and interviewing process for new students.
Working with the program manager to coordinate a WINS Advisory Committee
Additional duties and responsibilities as specified by WINS Manager and/or Sr. Director of Education
QUALIFICATIONS:
B.S. degree- a natural science-related field preferred
Minimum three years of education, counseling or youth development experience in a middle or high school or other youth-serving organization.
Evidence of previous training experience
Must work well with individuals of all ages, especially adolescents
Must demonstrate that you are comfortable and skilled working with the public and with a variety of audiences.
Proficiency in word processing and database software
Exceptional leadership skills, self-starter and team player
Valid drivers license and good driving record required
The successful candidate will be efficient, flexible, personable, creative, and able to relate to teens. Excellent organizational skills are essential. A sense of humor and the ability to prioritize and to handle multiple tasks simultaneously will make all the difference. Availability to chaperone on (frequent) Saturday and (infrequent) overnight trips is a must.
The Position is a Tuesday Saturday position.
