Activision cheap wow gold Blizzard is buying King Digital Entertainment for $5.9 billion, aiming to use the creator of "Candy Crush Saga" to bolster an already vast library of video games that includes "World of Warcraft" and become a global player in the rapidly growing mobile gaming sector.
Activision opted for the acquisition rather than building its own mobile studio because King already has 400 million monthly active users in 196 countries, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said during a conference call on Tuesday.
"Mobile gaming is the fastest growing entertainment sector," Kotick said. "It is projected to grow by 50 percent from $36 billion in 2015 to $55 billion by 2019."
As a combined company, Activision will keep the mobile gaming firm intact and allow King CEO Riccardo Zacconi to run the company "with minimal disruption," said Thomas Tippl, chief operating officer of Activision Blizzard.
The combined firm will boast approximately half a billion monthly active users, making the entertainment giant well positioned to "win mobile," Zacconi said during the call, citing opportunities to "cross promote games" built by each company.
King is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange but the company has not yet created a hit to surpass the 2012 launched "Candy Crush Saga," prompting skepticism on Wall Street that the company can stay competitive. King's revenue also fell 18 percent to $490 million in the recent second quarter.
Kotick, however, painted a picture of King as a successful player in the growing mobile space and as an asset to Activision.
"We have the largest library of intellectual property of games," Kotick said. "With mobile, we have the opportunity to reach new players in more than 180 countries, take that content we have created over the years and to leverage that content."
Nintendo is also aiming to market its decades of video game franchises to new audiences on smartphones and mobile devices, announcing it will debut its first mobile game called "Miitomo" in March. The free to play game will allow users to create a digital avatar of themselves in a kind of gaming social network. Nintendo plans to launch four other smartphone games by March 2017.
King Entertainment also plans to stay competitive in the mobile market by launching three new games "by the end of 2016," Zacconi said during the call. Activision will release its latest first person shooter "Call of Duty: Black Ops 3" on Friday. Blizzard will also launch the latest chapter of its space strategy franchise, "Starcraft II: Legacy of the Void," next Tuesday.
